MAIC (Mobile Area Interfaith Conference) is an Alabama non-profit corporation and an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We exist to increase awareness of social justice issues that affect the disenfranchised. We form alliances and collaborations with faith-based organizations, religious congregations and service organizations in Mobile, AL. These alliances and collaborations assist in creating systemic change, alleviating poverty and building relationships that support social justice for all our citizens.
MAIC was created 41 years ago to serve as the catalyst organization for meeting unmet needs in our community. We were instrumental in the founding of: Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, Feeding the Gulf Coast (Food Bank) and Housing First, Inc. (The Homeless Coalition). In 2002 we established a ministry in the Mobile Metro Jail which is now known as the Metro Chaplaincy Program. Again in 2016 we were called upon to create The Neighbor Center, a community based reentry program. In 2020, we opened the Academy for Job Opportunities. Our history timeline includes the establishments of such organizations:
• 1979 began as Council of Downtown Churches
• 1981 Started Bay Area Food Bank / Feeding the Gulf Coast, Inc.
• 1992 Started Homeless Coalition / Housing First, Inc.
• 2002 Began Metro Jail Ministry
• 2005 Incorporated as Mobile Area Interfaith Conference
• 2013 Opened Classroom inside Metro Jail
• 2016 Opened The Neighbor Center
• 2020 Started The Academy for Career Development
Today the MAIC seeks to help our Returning Neighbors rejoin society with the focus of preventing reincarceration. We start with the Neighbors that are currently incarcerated by offering basic hygiene supplies, books, and more. Our Chaplaincy department offers weekly religious services and oversees GED programs and more. Once our neighbors are released, Our Neighbor Center has case managers on staff to help our returning neighbors get the necessary documents to obtain a job, housing, food, and clothing. If the neighbor needs help with job placement, Our Academy provides job training, resume` building services, and job placement. We are here to change our community by reducing recidivism and ultimately strengthening our community.
